OBITUARY FOR LATE ELIZABETH WURM-------90 YEARS OF AGE

It is our painful duty this week to chronicle the death of the wife of Mr. Henry Wurm Sr., one of the oldest inhabitants of this village. The deceased was one of the earliest settlers in this area having settled here about 35 years ago. Of late years she has been afflicted with a cancer which caused her death last Saturday at the ripe old age of ninety years. The funeral took place last Tuesday morning and proceeded to the Lutheran Cemetery where the body was interred.

Mr. Daniel Wurm and son of Matthias attended.

Johann Martin Becker was born on March 24, 1829 at 3:00pm to Elisabeth Lein, the unmarried daughter of Johannes and Anna Maria Lein (pronounced "Line") of the Parish of Bleidenrod. The midwife, Catharine Kleinin (feminine form of surname Klein) identified Heinrich Becker as the father. Heinrich Becker from Nieder-Gemünden, admitted he was the father and declared the claim to be correct. Heinrich is the son of Johann Georg Becker, also from Nieder-Gemünden. The baptism took place on March 29, 1829 and was witnessed by Johann Martin Lein, brother of Elizabeth, and also of Bleidenrod. The baptism record was signed by Heinrich Becker, as father and Johann Martin Lein. Midwife Catharina Kleinin signed the baptism record by marking three crosses.

It is with the deepest regret we have to record the Death of Mr. Henry Wurm this wk. A short time ago he met with an accident through the running away of his team in the hay field by which his legs were badly hurt. He seemed to rally from the effects of the accident but on Saturday took a turn for the worse and gradually sunk until Death ended his sufferings on Sunday night. Mr. Wurm was one of the oldest settlers and well known through out the country and we think we can safely say he had not a enemy.
He was “Friend” to every one a kind loving Husband and affectionate Father. He leaves behind him a Widow three sons and six daughters to mourn his loss. Besides his aged Father one sister and two brothers the Bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community in the loss. The Funeral was on Wednesday.

Louis Wurm had married Elizabetha Rupp in 1890 in St. Peter's Lutheran Church. She was born in St. Jacob's, a daughter of Heinrich Rupp and Louisa Rau. She was working in the Huron Hotel (now Dominion) at that time owned by Mr. Hopple. Louis and family lived on the N.W. corner of Frederich and Rosalie Street. He worked out by the day and had a cider press. Their children - Leonard (1891 - 1959) Clearwater, B.C.; Arnold (1892 - 1962) Tampa, Florida; Alvin (1894 - 1968) Exeter, Ontario; Luella (1896 - 1989) Port Huron, Michigan; Herbert (1897 - 1891) Entwhistle, Alberta, were all born in town. By the time their youngest child came along in 1905, Louis had taken over his father's farm, Lot 19, Con.11, Hay at the south edge of Zurich. He moved his cider press across the road.

Louis sold the farm in 1936 to Ferd Haberer. He lived in different places for a time, passing away in 1946. His last home had been a little house near the Catholic Church. It had been enlarged by Harry Bedard. His wife had predeceased him in 1922. They are buried in the Zurich Lutheran Cemetery.

During Louis' day the farm south of the village had an excellent maple bush. A picture shows them boiling the sap in large kettles. After Louis sold the farm to Ferd Haberer he was quite upset when Ferd had the bush logged. One could not blame Ferd as a bush does go past its prime. Also the bush had no sentimental value to Ferd.

FUSS - John and Amelia

John Fuss (d. 1930), son of Heinrich and Anna (Ludolph) Fuss Sr., married Amelia Wurm (d. 1955), daughter of Henry and Katherine (Zeller) Wurm Jr., in 1891. They first lived in Zurich, where John was an active member of the Jubilee Band, then moved to Exeter in 1898, where John was a foreman in the flax mill. They returned to Zurich in 1910, when they purchased the home of Solomon Kuepfer. They were members of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. John and "Em", as she was known, had one daughter, Verda, who married Joe Swartz and went to live in Michigan. Amelia remained in her home, where she enjoyed crocheting, quilting and other crafts. John and Amelia rest in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery.

In Zurich, Edmund dealt in horses as well as provided a taxi service. In 1920, the family moved to Markham where Edmund bought a gravel truck business. His company built many of the roads in the Markham area, according to daughter, Kathleen "Kay" Wurm.

When Edmund became ill, Kathleen cared for him. He died due to kidney and heart complications.

Ed Wurm Passes Thirtieth Milestone With CNR Express

In October, 1952, Mr. Ed Wurm, jovial Markham resident, passed a thirty year milestone as the dependable C.N.R. Express Agent in the village. Born in Zurich, Ont., some forty miles west of London in Huron County 75 years ago, Mr. Wurm journeyed north where he was employed on the Algoma Central Railroad as engineer and fireman in the Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury districts. He also worked for two years on the Pacific Coast.

Mr. Wurm came to Markham in 1922 and was appointed to the express agency shortly after his arrival, a position which he has held ever since. Although the mail and freight arrives in much larger quantities now than it did a number of years ago the weather and road conditions are very much different. Back in the 1920's Mr. Wurm distributed the express by horse and wagon through giant snow drifts and sub zero temperatures but never once did he turn back because of the weather. The trains were often very late and Mr. Wurm recalls the day when the regular evening passenger became bogged down in snow and didn't arrive until four o'clock the following morning. The genial expressman has failed to be on the job on but one occasion and that was due to sickness.

Mr. Wurm still retains his position as bailiff but has since dropped all connections with the division court of York County. The well-known Markham resident claims that in all his personal dealing with people, 95% are quite co-operative. Mr. Wurm was connected with court work for over twenty years.

Mr. Wurm is an energetic sportsman and is known both in the Markham and Stouffville districts for his lawn bowling skill. Mr. Wurm receives his greatest enjoyment when bowling against his arch rival, Mr. Fred Button of Stouffville. The Markham sports enthusiast pays high tribute to Mr. Button for his bowling sportsmanship. In Mr. Wurm's own words he claims that Mr. Button is not only a great winner but better still a fine loser. The 75 year old Markham citizen has been a member of the Markham Bowling Club for the past thirty-five years and in that time has captured a number of trophies and awards. Besides many local prizes Mr. Wurm bowled with a number of championship groups. He aided his team in winning the McKenzie King trophy emblematic of the York County District Championship in three successive years and also won the Unionville Business Men's Club award in three straight years. Some of the Markham bowlers who have matched their skill with Mr. Wurm during the past twenty-five and thirty years are Mr. John Burns, Mr. Max Reesor and Mr. Peter Stewart. Although at the present time Mr. Wurm spends the greater part of his leisure summer hours on the bowling green during his younger days he was an active baseball players. His home town of Zurich walked off with the hardball championship against such strong opposition as Woodstock and Stratford. Mr. Wurm adapted himself to every position on the club with the exception of the outfield.

Mr. Wurm has one daughter, Mrs. Tom Hastings who resides on the seventh concession of Markham. Although Mr. Wurm resides in the village during the week he usually takes his weekly jaunt out to his daughter's farm on Sunday. Mr. Edward Wurm of Markham has gained down though the years, the reputation of being everybody's friend whether engaged in an exciting tournament at the bowling green or just discussing the bygone days with a friend on the street corner. The Tribune pays tribute to Mr. Wurm and hopes that he may enjoy many more years of good health and happiness.

There passed away at his home in Zurich on Friday May 26, 1939, a member of one of the oldest families in the village in the person of Charles Weber a son of the late Casper Weber one of the early pioneers of the village. He reached the age of 73 years 4 months and 8 days. He was a handy man, he would carpenter, mason and other jobs and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife and 3 daughters, Mrs. Hugh (Eva) Thiel, Mrs. Flossie Brown of London and Gertrude at home. One son Morris at home. Milton predeceased him 26 years before. Three brothers, Louis Weber of Zurich, Harry of Preston, Adolph of Ingersol. Three sisters Catharine Beers of Buffalo, Mrs. Mary Damuth of Port Arthur, Mrs. Anne Laidlaw of Croswell, Michigan.

Leonard had gone west a couple of times on the Harvest Excursion before he settled out there. Once he met brother Arnold on the same train. Charlie and Luella moved out to Clearwater, B.C. with them but they did not stay. Leonard worked at a saw mill in Clearwater, B.C. They never returned East.

They had a son Norman, buried here before they left. Out there Albert, Louis, Laurine and Leona were born. Leonard died in 1959, 68 years old.

Arnold had gone to Detroit where he drove an ice wagon. He later moved to Sebewaing and did carpentry work. His wife, Katherine (Katie) Wagner had come from there. It was here that he lost his arm when it was crushed in an accident because he had it out the open window of the truck. They had several children - Marian, Helma, Louis (lived nine months), [...], Ruby and [...]. They moved to Florida from here to the New Port Ritchie area. Arnold died Nov. 13, 1962 and is buried in New Port Ritchie. Aunt Katie lived until October 3, 1970. She is buried in Michigan.

Funeral Services Held For Arnold Wurm In New Port Richey, Fla.

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon in Duval Funeral Home, New Port Richey, Fla., for Arnold M. Wurm, 70, former Sebewaing resident, who died in a Tampa hospital early Tuesday morning following a short illness. The Rev. Eli G. Lepisto of First Evangelical Lutheran Church officiated and burial was in West Elfers Cemetery.

A native of Eurich [Zurich, Ontario], Canada, Mr. Wurm and Katherine Wagner of Sebewaing were married in Detroit. They lived for many years in the Sebewaing area before moving to New Port Richey 10 years ago. He had been a plasterer in the masonry industry before his retirement.

Surviving are Mr. Wurm's widow, Katherine, of New Port Richey, two sons, Donald M. and Robert L. Wurm, both of Sebewaing, three daughters, Mrs. Ralph (Marian) Payment of Detroit, Mrs. Edward (Helma) Mill of Sebewaing and Mrs. Douglas (Ruby) Johnson of Tampa, 11 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, two brothers, Herb and Alvin Wurm of Canada, and two sisters, Mrs. Luella Gossman of Port Huron and Mrs. Emma Schilbe of Dashwood, Ont.

Attending Mr. Wurm's funeral from here were Mrs. Edward Mill, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Wurm, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wurm, and Mrs. Ralph Payment of Detroit and Alfred Wagner of Pigeon.

"Herb was the first of the family to go west about 1914. He would be 17. At one time Herb told Emma that he wished his father had moved out there as he thought is was such a great place to live. Luella was upset when he left home but she got over it. Emma was only about nine at the time, and since Herb was always teasing her, maybe she did not care so much. He ended up in Saskatchewan where he settled in 1914.

Herb remained there until he got his army call. This would likely be 1918. When he came home his Mother wanted to hide him under the small log house. It had been dug out but Herb would hear none of that. Herb had difficulty with the many needles that they had to be given. John Decker saw him in London and when he told Louis he had tears in his eyes because it was such a pitiful sight. His face was black and blue from falling on it when he would pass out from the sight of the needle. The war was over before he was to be sent overseas. Herb sent Emma a card to have his horse in the stable when he came home. She had and he took off for the Bend.

Herb and Emma were both married in 1922. Herb and his wife, Rosalie Phaff went to Detroit for the winter. They came home to the Phaff farm. She died in August of 1923 when a little girl was born. They are both in the Zurich Lutheran Cemetery.

Herb stayed with his Dad, a widower by this time, but soon headed West again as Leonard and wife Tillie Vincent (of Dashwood) were already out there. Herb took up land near Lethbridge, Alberta where he build a shack (all that was necessary). He rented the land out as he worked as a carpenter. He was still there when Emma, Henry, Margaret and Alvin went out west in 1949. The women stayed in the shack and the men stayed elsewhere. Probably in town as they were great lovers of pool and snooker. (Emma's words). After a few days they headed on to meet Brother Leonard."

....."When the oil boom hit Drayton Valley, Herb sold his farm and moved up there to work as a carpenter. It was there that he met Betsy (his second wife)."

MARYSVILLE - Edgar H. Rupp, 90, of 1759 Vermont Ave., died Thursday, Nov. 15, 1979, in Mercy Hospital, Port Huron, after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Rupp was born Aug. 21, 1889, in Zurich, Ontario. He had viled in Marysville Since 1957.

He married Maude Trainor in 1921. She died Aug. 25, 1970.

Mr. Rupp was World War I Army veteran. He retired from the Detroit Stove Co. in 1957, after 43 years. He was a member of Our Saviour Lutheran Church, Port Huron, and the Marysville 60's Club.

He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Rebh, St. Clair Shores; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be 11am Monday in the Arthur Smith Funeral Homes-South Chapel, Port Huron. The Rev. Frederick Schoof, pastor of Our Saviour Church, will officiate.

Burial will be in Riverlawn Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm today and noon to 4pm and 7 to 9pm Sunday in the funeral home.
