- Phone Company Manager Honored for Long Service
Elmer G. Gilbertson
Elmer G. Gilbertson, 608 Summer Street, Eau Claire, manager for the Wisconsin Telephone company, completes 25 years of service with the company today.
Gilbertson entered the telephone business March 21, 1917. He started word as installer and subsequently filled successively the positions of commercial agent, collector, manager at Bayfield, district commercial agent, assistant manager at Superior, and commercials representative. On October 19, 1928, he was given the assignment of manager at Menomonie and on June 1, 1931, he received his present appointment.
In his capacity as manager, Gilbertson is responsible for efficently and satisfactorily serving the telephonic requirements of the citizens of Eau Claire. During the more than ten years he has served as manager, the number of telephone subscribers has increased from 7086 to 9068. Notwithstanding the demands made upon him by the business, Gilbertson is keenly interested in all civic enterprises and actively participates in advancing their purposes.
In recognition of the completion of 25 years of service President William R. McGovern presented him with a diamond service button.

E.G. Gilbertson, Phone Company Manager, Dies
Elmer G. Gilbertson, 55, manager of the Wisconsin Telephone company here, died at Luther hospital here shortly before 11am today.
Death was due to complications which set in after an operation some days ago. Following the operation, he was convalescing at his home, 608 Summer St., when circulatory complications suddenly set in, and he was rushed back to the hospital.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed.
Surviving are his wife, a son, Eric E., of Eau Claire, his mother, Mrs. George Gilbertson, also of this city, four brothers, Lester, of Rice Lake, Howard of Chippewa Falls, Roger, of Menomonie, Vernon, of Eau Claire; and three sisters, Mrs. Gail Gunderson, Mrs. Everett Baker, and Miss Gladys Gilbertson, all of Eau Claire.
Born in Eau Claire on June 30, 1896, Mr. Gilbertson had been with the Wisconsin Telephone company for 34 years, the last 20 years as manager here except for about a year, during World War II, when he served as general manager of the Northwest Telephone company at Tomah.
He first started with the company here on Nov. 22, 1917, as installer. He next was appointed commercial agent here. In 1918 he was made manager of the Bayfield exchange; in 1921 he became district commercial agent with headquarters in Eau Claire, and in 1928 he was made manager at Menomonie. On Jan. 1, 1931, he returned to Eau Claire as manager. Here he had remained as manager since, except for the time at Tomah.
Active in civic affairs, Mr. Gilbertson was a Kiwanian and a past president of the club here. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce. Interested in Boy Scouting, he was, at the time of his death, district chairman of Old Abe district, and a member of the executive board of Chippewa Valley council.
He was also a member of the various Masonic bodies and of Eau Claire Consistory and a past master of Eau Claire Lodge No. 112.

Gilbertson Funeral to Be Held Monday
Funeral services for Elmer G. Gilbertson, manager of the Wisconsin Telephone company here, who died Friday following an operation, will be held Monday at 3pm at the Masonic temple. The Rev. Roy B. Schmeichel will officiate.
Masonic services will be held at the grave, conducted by Eau Claire lodge 122, of which Mr. Gilbertson was past master.
Interment will be in Forest Hill cemetery.
Friends may call at Stokes and Sons Sunday afternoon and evening, and at the Masonic temple from 1 to 3pm Monday.
