  We are now making the assertion that Matilda Jane Thompson, wife of Thomas Edward Hastings is the same individual as Matilda Thompson, daughter of Thomas Thompson and Martha McMullen. A marriage record for Thomas Edward Hastings and Matilda Jane Thompson has not been located. Matilda's death record gives her birth place as Pine Grove, Vaughan. The 1851 census lists a Matilda Thompson of correct age residing with parents Thomas and Martha Thompson and siblings in Vaughan, York County, Ontario. Father's occupation in 1851 was Lumber Merchant. Our Matilda (Thompson) Hastings named her first born Martha. While for the last 25 years we have suspected that the two Matilda's are the same person, the suspicion became an assertion more recently when DNA showed the connection between the descendants of our Matilda Jane Thompson and the descendants of Hannah Ida Thompson who is the granddaughter of Thomas William Thompson and the niece of Matilda Thompson.
