- In 1856, Charles emigrated to Canada with his mother and stepfather, settling first in Guelph and later in the town of Fergus, Ontario. The family would remain in Fergus for many years where the Youngs became well-known builders and contractors.
In 1863 he married Euphemia McIntyre. In 1883 the family moved to St. Joseph Island.
