- From "The History of Wellington County" by Jean F. Hutchinson
John S. Armstrong married Mary Scott, and settled in Eramosa Twp. He built Armstrong's Mill on the Speed River just across the boundary in Guelph Twp., in 1856. Later the mill was owned by his nephews, Thomas and Edward Armstrong, sons of Wm. S. and his wife, Lucy Peters. In its day, it was a first class mill, but to-day it stands silent as a memorial to the memory of a man of strong determination. The dam and mill were built under conditions that would have discouraged most men. The dam was washed out by freshets on several occasions, until Armstrong was on the verge of financial ruin. He was aided by his wife, and they finally completed the task. The project became a boon to the entire community, but also became a financial success. It is now owned by artist, Kenneth Danby. John S. Armstrong and his wife seemed to have eleven children: Mrs. John Ironside of Toronto, George, Jr., Robert, Mrs. David Rea, William, Frederick, Thomas, Mrs. John Farrow, Adam, Mrs. Charles Hindes, of Toronto, and Albert.
