    Record of baptism indicates that Gustav Bernhard Torvaldsson was born June 10, 1883 and baptized Aug. 26, 1883 in the Snarum church, Modum parish. His parents were (labourer) Torvald Gulbrandsson Gubberud and wife, Anne Karine Bertilsdotter. It states they were living on Persbråten (Skretteberg) at the time of his birth. Gustav`s uncles, (bachelor) Ole Bertilsson Persbråten and (bachelor) Torger Bertilsson Persbråten were his godparents.

    It appears that both Gustav and his brother, Gotfred were born on Persbråten (Skretteberg), but took their father`s farm name of Gubberud at some time while they were living in the United States.

Destination would be St. Vincent, Minnesota on the north-east border of North Dakota.

    Under occupations, Bertil is listed as being a "Labourer", Maren as "Married", Torger and Torvald as a "Labourer", Anne as "Married" and both Gustav and Gotfred as a "Child". "år" meaning year, the record may be indicating that Gustav was 11 months of age and Gotfred was one month old.

    The database maintained by the North Dakota Institute for Regional Studies shows Naturalization Record listings for Gustav Gubberud in Cavalier County, North Dakota (May 23, 1904 and July 5, 1910) and Thorvald Gubberud in Pembina County, North Dakota on July 20, 1885 and in Cavalier County on June 22, 1896.

    According to the census of 1916, Gus arrived in Saskatchewan in 1911. In 1916 he is a 32 year old single male farming with Andrew Gjernes, age 25, on the 39th township, range 18, 2nd meridian, Spalding, Saskatchewan. Farm hand Carl Mortenson, age 24, is also living with them.

    • Gustav and his brother Martin both served in World War 1. Gustav was recruited for service on November 5, 1917 at Humboldt, Saskatchewan. Regiment number 256980. At that time he was a bachelor farming in Spalding, Saskatchewan. Religion is listed as Lutheran. Physical description is recorded as 5' 9", fair complexion, blue eyes, dark hair. Next of kin is listed as father Thorwald Gubberud of Walhalla, North Dakota.
