Last Rites Observed for Leo R. Francis
Largely attended funeral services were held Saturday morning for Leo. R. Francis, proprietor of the Queen's Hotel here for the past 15 years, who passed away Wednesday night following a serious illness of a little more than a week. Born in Palmerston 44 years ago, a son of George A. Francis and the late Mrs. Francis, he had resided in Hanover the greater part of his life, coming here as a small boy when his father took over the Queen's Hotel in 1903. He was married in 1924 to Lydia Gaiser, and after three years residence at Toronto returned to take over the hotel which he had operated since making it one of the finest and best-managed hotels in the district. Surviving are his widow, one son [...] and a daughter [...], also his father G.A. Francis, Misses Madeline and Anna Francis of Toronto. Solemn high requiem mass was celebrated at Holy Family Church on Saturday morning, with Rev. Father I. G. Hoffarth, parish priest, as celebrant, Rev. Father H. R. Brick of Carlsruhe as deacon and Rev. Father J.A. Lenhard of Walkerton as sub deacon. The remains were borne to their last resting place in the Hanover Roman Catholic Cemetery by six of deceased's fellow-members in the Kinsmen Club- Jerome Knechtel, Jack Binkley, Oscar Schwindt, Milton Zister, Orrville McCalian and Dr. L.S. Stokes and other members of the club carried the numerous floral tributes.
History of the Queen's Hotel
Mr. Joseph McGaw purchased a couple of lots from Mr. C. Hassenjager on the south-east corner of the Durham Road and the County Line some eightysix years ago, the property was just farm land recently surveyed into village lots. Here he built a tavern called McGaw's tavern, now known as the Queen's Hotel. The first meeting of the Bentinck Council held in Hanover in the year 1863 was held in "McGaw's Hotel". It was a frame building painted white with green trimming, and it had a wide verandah all around three sides of it. In the early days there was a cattle fair held on the corner, or in McGaw's hotel yard once a month, and buyers came quite a distance to attend this market. In the old Directory which lists Hanover's industrial like in 1866, the advertisement of this old hotel has quite a snappy tone and must have created a fine impression eighty years ago. | Francis, Leo R. (I22952)

Letter written to Ben Holtzman from his sister, Maggie of 10 Homewood Ave., Kitchener, Ontario on January 9, 1938
My Dear Bro -
Well first of all I will write about where you was born. You were born down on the Bronson line on Granpa Surerus farm in that old log house. I suppose you remember the house. When Mom and Dad were married they moved in the old log house for a while. I think Noah the one next to you was born there too. Then they moved to Mildmay and there I was born and when a mere baby they moved back to Zurich and that where we were all raised. Now we were baptized in the house by the factory which you ought to remember. Rev Mr. Dierlane baptized 5 or 6 of us at one time. We all had a certificate and I know you took yours with you some time or other. You was born June 3rd 1871. Dad never had a big family bible. Now I tell you if you could go see Aunt Mary mom's sister and get her to sign a paper that she could prove your birth for no doubt she was the one who waited on mom when you were born. And ask her who was in attendance and if you had a Doctor or not and if - "who". See if you can locate your Birth Certificate (Daufshein). I will try and see if they kept a record of baptisms in the Zurich church and if they did I might be able to get a copy from the minister that's there now. | Holtzman, Benjamin (I26350)

Likely a descendent of John Stiver who wrote as follows,
Found at http://www.city.markham.on.ca/mpl/history/settlemarkham.htm on Jan 1, 2006
“My parents were natives of Hanover and…were settled in Markham Township in the County of York in 1794. In 1795 I was born, the first white child in the townhip. The suffering and poverty of that time were so great that my mother had no substance for me, and I was taken in by an elder sister when I was six months old, who resided in Niagara. There I was fed in cow’s milk and corn meal. When I grew up to be able to work, an elder brother and I chopped wood in the woods all day, day after day, and all the clothing we had was a linen shirt and pants, and bare foot until I was 12

This is a small gift from your godfather to be used daily and to grow yourself from it so you will search for trust and find its worth.
I want to from it find a long life and praise my god as long as I am here. Be forever faithful and blessed until your cool grave and do not go a finger’s length from God’s way. Remain true to what you have praised in your continuing days. That is the wish of your godfather.
