A Pioneer Gone -- The death of Michael ZELLER, on Friday last, came as a painful surprise to the residents of Zurich and vicinity, he having been one of the early settlers of this section. The deceased moved from Waterloo County to Hay in the year 1856, where he carried on farming for some years and in the year 1878 took up residence in Zurich. He was born in Hutschenhausen, Rhein, Bavaria, Germany, on the 28th April, 1825, and in 1836, together with his father, mother and two sisters, came to Canada, the journey at that date occupying four months. They settled in Preston and after a short time, moved to Berlin. He was married in the year 1851 to Clara Liebler and a family of eight children was born to them, the youngest of the family, Mrs. Wm. J. McNevin, died about 5 years ago, the survivors being Jacob L. of Wisconsin, Mrs. Dr. Buchanan; Mrs. Philip Sippel, Mrs. Wm. Klopp, Mrs. Ed. Appel, and Edmund, all living in Zurich and Mrs. J.H. Roedding of Tilsonburg. The services were conducted by Rev. E. Schuelke, who preached a sermon on Exodus 20: 2,3, as requested by the deceased. Interment took place at the Lutheran Cemetery. The pallbearers, chosen at his request were Henry Greb, Henry Walper Sr., Henry Bauer Sr., Henry Liphardt, Henry Ortwein, and Henry Weseloh Sr.

Michael married Clarissa Liebler on 8 Jul 1851 in Greenbush, Berlin (border of Waterloo, Ontario). Clarissa (daughter of Peter Liebler and Mary Main) was born on 22 Mar 1835 in Williamsburg, Waterloo Township, Waterloo County, Ontario; died on 12 Dec 1904 in Zurich, Hay Township, Huron County, Ontario; was buried in St Peter's Evangelical Lutheran, Zurich. Obituary Zurich Herald December 16, 1904

On Monday morning the citizens of Zurich were surprised and grieved to learn that the angel of death had visited us and taken away the soul of one of our earliest settlers, in the person of Clarissa Liebler, widow of the late Michael ZELLER. Her end came peacefully and painlessly just after midnight. The late Mrs. ZELLER was born on March 22, 1835, and was married on July 8th, 1851, in the County of Waterloo. Over forty years ago, she moved to this township, where she has since resided, and since the death of her partner over a year ago made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Ed. Appel. She leaves five daughters, two sons, thirty-two grandchildren and four great grandchildren, also a number of brothers and sisters. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, the remains being interred in the Lutheran cemetery. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. J. Yager, of the Evangelical Church. The old friends who acted as pallbearers were F. Hess Sr., John Diechert Sr., J.F. Richbeil, Philip Hauch, Henry Lipphardt, and Rudolph Heideman.
