His boyhood days were spent on his father's farm near Roseville. On February 13th, 1849, he was married to Nancy Schlichter who was born August 24th, 1829. Soon after their marriage they settled on a farm (The farm is now owned by Mr. Samuel Tohman) about a mile west of New Dundee, where they resided until March 20th, 1883, when they sold their farm and moved to Yale, Michigan, where he again purchased a farm and followed farming for several years but now lives retired. Nearly thirty years ago he was ordained to the ministry for the River Brethren (Dunkards) denomination, for which body he is still a diligent worker. As a minister he is well liked by his congregation and others, and his sermons are distinguished for the great amount of well-digested thought so vividly expressed in the plainest language, that no one hearing him preach can say, "I did not understand him," for all who wish to be taught out of the Word of God, will say, "Mr. Hallman's sermons are always Gospel-like and soul-cheering."

Rev. Wendell Hallman, the youngest son of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Detweiler) Hallman, was born in North Dumfries Township, Waterloo County, Ontario, November 4th, 1827. His boyhood days were spent on his father's farm near Roseville. On February 13th, 1849, he was married to Nancy Schlichter who was born August 24th, 1829. Soon after their marriage they settled on a farm about a mile west of New Dundee, where they resided until, March 20th, 1883, when they sold their farm and moved to Michigan, where he resided for some years. They then moved to Berlin, Ontario, where he is still living (they lived here until they died). Nearly 40 years ago he was ordained to the ministry of the River Brethred (Dunkards) denomination. As a father he always sought to give his children wholesome advice. He was always very strict in training his children, sometimes we children thought perhaps a little too strict, but the writer (Rev. H.S. Hallman) at least does not think so now. As early as the writer can recollect, the family was gathered together every morning, and while we were all quietly seated father would read a chapter out of the Bible, followed by an earnest simple prayer. These moments made and left a deep impression on the minds of the children, and must certainly have been a source of strength to those who were followers of Christ. His most earnest desire has always been that all his children might be saved. As a minister he is well like by his congregation and others. A view of his former homestead is shown below.

Pennypacker, Philadelphia, Pa., and get the book, "Historical and Biographical Sketches of the Pannebeckers", edited by Pennybecker. It is well worth the money and one of the most complete works of its kind in existence) were of the first settlers of German origin who settled in Pennsylvania over two hundred years ago. Notes:

    From Ezra E. Eby Book

Benjamin was born Sept. 18, 1783 in Montgomery Co., Pa where he followed farming. During the great financial depression of 1816-1827 many farmers failed financially and, in order to pay their debts, they sold their farms at great sacrifice. With whatever money they had left, they winded their way to Canada where land could be had cheap and thus made another attempt to gain a free home. As a rule, all these parties in a very few years were the posessors of valuable farms. Benjamin moved to Canada with his family in 1825.

They left Montgomery on May 6, and with two double horse teams and one single horse, crossed the Niagara River from Lewiston to Queenston on a large flat boat and winded their way up to Dundas and through the Beverly Swamp to Waterloo County arriving at Jacob Rosenburger's near Preston where they made a stay of 3 days. Then they moved on a farm 2 miles west of Waterloo. Here he resided until the spring of 1826 when he moved to N. Dumfries Twp. about 1 mile east of Roseville where he had purchased a most beautiful farm of about 200 acres, then nearly all forest. Here Banjamin died Sept. 10, 1879.

He was a member of the mennonite church and lived a strictly moral life. Principles of Christianity were always foremost in his dealings with his fellow men. His advice to his grandchildren was always good. "My earliest recollection of him was when he held us on his knee and instructed us to be a good boy. Three of his sons and a number of gradsons and great grand sons entered the ministry.

On Sept. 2, 1802 he married Elizabeth Dettweiller, daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Harley) Dettweiller.
