Ole was baptized on June 16, 1866. His surname is not specifically recorded in this record. His father was Harald Olson. His mother was Birgit Tollersdatter. Numerous witnesses were listed including Knud Knudson, Knud Thorrson, Mari Tollefsdatter, Bortolsletten (sp?). Further review of this record required.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ole Haraldson Olson was born on Grønna, Nes Parish in Hallingdal, Buskerud County (Hallingdal being a large area including several Parishes in Buskerud County, and the Norwegian "County" is similiar to our Provinces.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    According to obit....

When he was 6 years old, his mother died. He was adopted by his uncle Tollef Tollefson. In 1882, they moved from Wimeshiek County, Iowa to Dakota territory where they homesteaded in Hay township of Cavalier County (near Vang).

After his marriage, filed his own homestead in Loam township. When he retired 10 years before his death, son Ole K. Olson took over the farm.

Served for many years as a supervisor and assessor in Loam Township and was also a director on the school board.

Recalled that when he came as a boy of 16 with the Tollefsons to Hay Township, there were no settlers any further west than their homestead and all their trips to a town had to be made by team to either Bathgate or St. Thomas.

Other accounts (eg. Seeds in New Sod) indicate that he was 8 or 9 when mother died and that this occurred in Spring Grove, Minnesota. Lost track of his father about this time.

Ole married Nellie Caroline Peterson on 20 Dec 1887 in Loam Township, Cavalier County, North Dakota. Nellie (daughter of Ole "Olaf" Pederson and Karen | Caroline Nilsdotter | Hanson) was born on 17 Oct 1868 in Fort Garry (Winnipeg), Manitoba; died on 7 Jun 1942 in Vang, Cavalier County, North Dakota; was buried in Vang Lutheran Cemetery, Hope Township, Cavalier County, North Dakota. Died:
Obituary reprinted in "From Norway to North America: The Descendants in Canada and the United States of Olaf and Caroline Pederson" by Jean E. Peterson, 1981.

One of the pioneers and early settlers of Hope township in Cavalier County, North Dakota, passed away to the unknown beyond on November 12, 1924. Olaf Peterson was born at Hallan (sic), Norway, September 7, 1833 and was at his death 91 years, 2 months and 5 days old.

He immigrated to America in the year 1869 and first settled at Selkirk, Manitoba, living there for one and one half years.

He then moved to Pembina county, close to Pembina city. There he helped to take in all the hardships of the early settlers, which were at times mostly unreasonable, but Mr. Peterson was one of the boys and never grumbled or worried over hardships. About 36 years ago, he moved from Pembina to what was afterwards called Hope township in Cavalier County, N. D. where he had made his home with his family, except three years that he lived at Spalding, Sask., Canada, where he proved up a homestead.

Mr. Peterson was a continuous resident here since 1914. He had lived in Hope township with his (son) Charley. Mrs. Olaf Peterson (Caroline) died eight years ago, February 4, 1916, and was 74 years old. To them were born the following children, all of whom are well and favorably known in Hope township and Cavalier county: Seward Peterson, Adolph Peterson of Vang; Mrs. Ole H. Olson of Vang; Mrs. Sarah Quale, Brinsmade, N.D.; Mrs. Ida Curry, Star City, (Manitoba: sic) Sask.; Pete Peterson of Vang; Mrs. Sam Braaten, Vang; Fred Peterson, Vang; Ole Peterson and Charlie Peterson, Vang.

Olaf Petersons were grandparents to 66 children and great-grandparents to 42. Olaf Peterson as a neighbor could not be excelled and it can honestly be said about the children that they have been an honor to their parents and also to our community.

Mr. Peterson will be greatly missed by all his friends for his jolly stories and his native (narratives?) of early days and pioneer settlers.

Interment took place November 18 at the Vang cemetery.
