Markham Express Agent For Over Fifty Years

On Monday, Jan. 4th, Mr. Edward Wurm, a well-known and highly respected resident of Markham Village and more recently at the home of his daughter, conc. 7, Markham, passed away in the Stouffville Brierbush Hospital. He was in his 84th year.

The late Mr. Wurm was everybody's friend. He was known by young and old. His connections with mail and express deliveries and in the field of local sport made him one of the most familar figures on Markham's main street.

Born in Zurich, Ont., west of London in Huron County. Mr. Wurm was employed on the Algoma Central Railroad as an engineer and fireman in the Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury districts. He also worked for two years on the Pacific Coast. He took up residence in Markham in 1922. On his retirement from the mail and express route, the deceased was honoured by the Post Office Dept. with a medal for his faithful service. He served as a district bailiff for many years.

Although lawn bowling was his first love, he, as a young man, was an enthusiastic baseball player in his home town of Zurich. His club had captured a number of championships. Mr. Wurm had collected a number of bowling trophies as proof of his prowess on the greens. In former years he had represented Markham in numerous tournaments here. The late Fred Button was one of his best friends and keenest rivals. In politics, he was an ardent Liberal. His wife, the former Lydia Schwartz predeceased him a number of years ago.

The late Mr. Wurm suffered a stroke on Christmas Day. He passed away on Jan. 4th. He is survived by one daughter, Kathleen (Mrs. Tom Hastings), conc. 7, Markham. The funeral service was conducted from the Dixon Chapel, Markham, on Wednesday afternoon by Rev. R. Chapen and Rev. G. Davison. Interment was made in Melville Cemetery. The pallbearers were messrs. Donald Ferguson, Douglas Ferguson, Elgin Hastings, Harry Lewis, Raymond Brillinger and Gordon Lunau.
