  • Notes
    • From the research of Earl Hastings

Charles Clifford Hastings was educated at Indian Head and Sintaluta. At a very early age he developed a keen interest in race horses, no doubt from having been exposed to them on his father’s farm in the Sintaluta district. He left his father’s ranch, north of Regina in 1921 and became a colourful figure at Canadian and U.S. race tracks for over half a century. He was a jockey until he was injured in a racing mishap and thereafter became a trainer.

One of the best thoroughbreds to come under his care was Rochester II which won many races in Western Canada while sporting the colours of the late Jack MacDonald of Winnipeg. Another owner, Stan B. Carver, named a horse “goggles” after Charles Hastings who was familiarly known by that nickname around the tracks because he wore thick-lensed spectacles.

It was in 1930 that he last visited his parents at the ranch in Saskatchewan. He is interred at the Park Lawn Cemetery, Toronto, Ontario.
