    The late Nora Carlaw wrote:

James Carlaw and his wife Mary Isobelle Ferguson came to the United States from Scotland probably about 1840. At that time there was a great deal of anti British feeling in the U.S.A., so they moved to Chippawa, Ontario, where he a shoemaker store. His family kept getting larger until finally, he found he couldn't make shoes fast enough to provide for his family, so he moved to a farm east of Arthur, on what is now hwy #9, in West Garafraxa Township in 1859 on concession 3, lot 33. The family attended Arthur Public School.

According to the Wellington County Directory 1870-1871 James Carlaw had a farm on con. 3 lot 33 and James and his son John had a farm on con. 3 lot 34. James Carlaw was a shoemaker in Arthur, and John Carlaw was a carpenter.

James Carlaw was born in 1808 and died on June 30, 1898. He married Mary Isobelle Ferguson, born 1822, died Nov. 8, 1896. The family was born in Chippawa, except Robert and Maria who were born in West Garafraxa.
